New assistant editor joins AVMA publications team

On June 10, the AVMA Publications Division welcomed Dr. Helen L. Simons to her new post as an assistant editor for the AVMA journals. Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Janis H. Audin, chose her after a thorough national search. She brings strong research skills to the team, having spent years working for both public and private organizations involved in research.

Dr. Simons received her DVM degree from the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, in Canada in 1999. For the past three years, she has worked as an associate veterinarian in a small animal private practice located in Newport News, Va.

Dr. Simons also holds a PhD degree in biology from the University of London. Prior to joining the veterinary profession, she managed clinical trials at Roche Products and at Allen & Hanburys Ltd. (Glaxo), both located in England. She has also worked as a research manager for the Department of Medicine, Dalhousie University in Novia Scotia, and as a project manager for Keal-Newley Ltd. in England, a contract clinical research company servicing pharmaceutical corporations.

Her scientific reports have been published in journals that include Nature, Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, Journal of Cell Science, Laboratory Investigation, and Journal of Anatomy.
