The FDA-CVM announced in the Feb 17 Federal Register the availability of research funds to study the microbiologic hazards associated with the food animal production environment.

Approximately $600,000 is offered for fiscal year 2000. The FDA anticipates making three or six Cooperative Agreement awards at $100,000 to $200,000 per award per year. Support for these agreements may be up to three years.

Submit letters of intent by April 3. Letters can be faxed at (301) 827-8250. Applications must be submitted by April 17.

It is of particular interest to the FDA that this research advance scientific knowledge of human foodborne pathogens, such as Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and Campylobacter. Potential areas of investigation include antimicrobial resistance development and dissemination in the animal production environment, approaches to mitigate or minimize antimicrobial resistance, and the impact of antimicrobial drug use on the carriage of foodborne pathogens and sentinel microorganisms used for monitoring programs.
