Event: 27th annual forum, Oct. 3-6, 2013, New Orleans
Program: The forum, co-sponsored by the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry, American Veterinary Dental College, and American Veterinary Dental Society, drew over 1,000 participants. The specialist-in-training module focused on oral surgery. Lectures, briefs, and labs were offered for veterinary dental clinicians and technicians. David B. Powers, MD, director of the Duke University Medical Center’s Craniomaxillofacial Trauma Program, spoke on the synergy between human and veterinary trauma surgery. The forum was the venue for annual meetings of the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry, Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation, Veterinary Dental Educators Group, and Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians.

American Veterinary Dental College

Awards: AVDC Peter Emily Service Award, sponsored by Virbac Animal Health: Dr. Jennifer Rawlinson, Fort Collins, Colo., for her role in the development of an equine dental specialty within the AVDC. A 1998 graduate of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and a diplomate of the AVDC, Dr. Rawlinson is an assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. Earlier in her career, she worked part time as a lecturer on veterinary dentistry at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and was a dental consultant in Tennessee. AVDC Robert Wiggs Outstanding Candidate Award, sponsored by Zoetis: Dr. Ana Nemec, Ljubljana, Slovenia. A 2004 graduate of the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia and a diplomate of the AVDC, Dr. Nemec is a member of the veterinary faculty at the University of Ljubljana and a research associate in the Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences at the University of California-Davis. Journal of Veterinary Dentistry Debra Smith Award: Dr. Scott MacGee, Lenexa, Kan., was the second recipient of this award, given for the best article authored by a resident. A 1997 graduate of the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine and a diplomate of the AVDC, Dr. MacGee co-owns Companion Animal Dentistry of Kansas in Lenexa.

Academy of Veterinary Dentistry

Awards: AVD Fellow-of-the-Year Award, sponsored by Zoetis: Dr. John Lewis, Robbinsville, N.J., for contributions made toward advancing the fields of veterinary dentistry and oral surgery. A 1997 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and a diplomate of the AVDC, Dr. Lewis practices at NorthStar VETS Specialty Center in Robbinsville. Earlier in his career, he served as an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Research Grant Award ($5,000 award each): Drs. Christopher Snyder, Madison, Wis., and Lindsey Snyder, Madison, Wis., for “The enhancement and prolongation of the analgesic effect of buprenorphine on a bupivacanine infraorbital block”; and Drs. Kevin Stepaniuk, St. Paul, Minn., and Gary Goldstein, St. Paul, Minn., for “Validation and optimization of cytology for the screening of oral masses in dogs and cats.” AVD Fellow of the Academy: Dr. Jon Gieche, Whitewater, Wis.

American Veterinary Dental Society

Awards: AVDS Education and Research Award, sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition Inc.: Dr. Richard Meadows, Columbia, Mo., for contributions in the area of veterinary dentistry and helping to achieve the AVDS mission of a global society for the advancement of veterinary dental knowledge. A 1981 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Dr. Meadows is an associate teaching professor of small animal community practice medicine in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and co-chairs the Veterinary Dental Educators Group.

Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians

The AVDT welcomed newly certified members Aileen Avalos, New York; Janyce Cooper, Virginia Beach, Va.; Neetza Drake, Ashland, Ore.; Kari Griffith, Everett, Wash.; Claire Harrison, North Berwick, United Kingdom; and Kim Polonsky, Palmer Lake, Colo.

Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry

Awards: Research Grant Award ($7,500 award each): Dr. Jamie Anderson, Concord, Calif., for “Clinical and histopathologic characterization of canine ulcerative stomatitis;” and Drs. Kevin Stepaniuk, St. Paul, Minn., and Gary Goldstein, St. Paul, Minn., for “Validation and optimization of cytology for the screening of oral masses in dogs and cats.”

Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation

Awards: Service Award: Dr. Barron Hall, Vienna, Va., for providing free dental care to zoo animals and animals in exotic animal sanctuaries. A 1993 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Hall owns Animal Dental Clinic in Vienna. He is a fellow of the AVD and a diplomate of the AVDC.
