In Memoriam

Dr. Amling (OSU '47), 76, London, Ohio, died Nov. 1, 2001. A beef cattle consultant since 1990, Dr. Amling was adjunct associate professor at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine from 1983–1990. Prior to that, he worked as a staff veterinarian for J. Sawyer Company in London for 27 years. From 1948–1963 Dr. Amling was in mixed practice, first in Pana, Ill., and then London.

He was an honor roll member of the AABP, a life member of the AASV, and a member of the Central Ohio VMA. Dr. Amling had also served as president of the Ohio VMA and the Central Illinois VMA. From 1965–1969 he was president of the Ohio Veterinary Medicine Licensing Board and from 1995–1999, was reappointed to the board.

In 1987 Dr. Amling received the Ohio Animal Health Foundation Distinguished Service Award, and in 1997 the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine's Distinguished Alumnus Award. He was elected to the OSU Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 and to the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame in 1984. Dr. Amling was also a past president of the London Recreation Commission, served on the tax appeal board, and was an emeritus member of the Wittenberg University Board.

Dr. Bailey (PUR '66), 69, Louisa, Va., died Sept. 30, 2001. He worked as a relief veterinarian in Virginia. From 1966–1988 Dr. Bailey owned mixed practices in Louisa and then Edgar, Wis. He was a member of the Virginia VMA and the Wisconsin VMA. Dr. Bailey is survived by his wife, Phyllis, and four children. Dr. Baxter (COL '92), 38, Monroe, Wash., died Oct. 26, 2001. She practiced at Cascade Animal Clinic in Monroe. Dr. Baxter was a member of the Seattle-King County VMA. She was devoted to improving the quality of life for stray animals. Dr. Fehrenbacher (ILL '52), 80, Wyoming, Ill., died Oct. 1, 2001. Before retiring in 1986, he practiced in Wyoming. Prior to that, Dr. Fehrenbacher taught agriculture at Mansfield High School in Mansfield, Ill. He was a member of the University of Illinois Academy of Veterinary Medicine and the Illinois State VMA. Dr. Fehrenbacher was also a member of the Mississippi Valley VMA.

He served on the board of the Wyoming Bank and Trust Company, retiring in 1999. Dr. Fehrenbacher was a past president of the Wyoming High School Board and the Stark County Extension Board. A World War II Army veteran, he served as a first lieutenant in field artillery in the European theatre. Dr. Fehrenbacher is survived by his wife, Barbara; two daughters; and two sons. Dr. Langman (COR '45), 78, Orefield, Pa., died Nov. 1, 2001. He owned the Country Doctor Veterinary Clinic in Orefield for the past 20 years. From 1960–1978 Dr. Langman owned Maple Hills Veterinary Hospital in Allentown, Pa. Prior to that, he was in mixed practice in New York. Dr. Langman was an Army veteran. Dr. Miller (COR '26), 99, Mamaroneck, N.Y., died Nov. 20, 2001. Retired since 1968, he was the past owner of the Miller-Clark Animal Hospital in Mamaroneck, which his father, Dr. H. K. Miller, an 1891 graduate of the American Veterinary College, had founded. Dr. Miller was a member of the New York State VMS and the AAHA.

Dr. Shoeman (ISU '39), 87, Ames, Iowa, died Nov. 9, 2001. Retired since 1984, he had worked as city veterinarian and city health officer in Ames. Dr. Shoeman had also supervised the Ames Animal Shelter and taught public health classes at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. From 1967–1974 he was involved with animal disease regulatory work and supervision of slaughter facilities in West Bend, Iowa. In 1967, Dr. Shoeman served as Iowa state assistant veterinarian in regulatory and meat inspection capacities. Prior to that, he practiced large animal medicine in Iowa for 25 years. During World War II, Dr. Shoeman worked for the Army Inspections Service. Early in his career, he taught at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Shoeman was a 50-year member of the Iowa VMA. His two sons and three daughters survive him. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 516 Kellogg Ave., Ames, IA 50010.

Dr. Simic (KSU '43), 94, Beatrice, Neb., died Aug. 28, 2001. Retired in 1973, Dr. Simic had begun his small animal hospital in Beatrice in 1943. Dr. Simic was a life member and past president of the Nebraska VMA. He was appointed by the governor to the Grade A Milk Board to organize a permanent board.

Dr. Smith (COL '64), 61, Roundup, Mont., died Oct. 8, 2001. Prior to retiring in 1995, he ran Smith Veterinary Hospital in Santa Fe, N.M., a practice established by his father, Dr. Edwin Smith (COL '38), in 1946. Dr. Smith was a member of the Valle De Norte VMA and served on the board of the New Mexico VMA.

He also served on the Santa Fe city-county planning commission and was a past president of the Santa Fe Jaycees. Dr. Smith is survived by his wife, Jean; two sons; and a daughter. His daughter, Dr. Katherine Dobesh (COL '90), and son-in-law, Dr. Michael Dobesh (COL '90), have run Smith Veterinary Hospital since 1995. His uncle, Dr. Earl Smith (COL '44), and cousin, Dr. Kenneth Smith (COL '78), are veterinarians in Colorado. Dr. Victor (MIN '99), 40, Walker, Minn., died Sept. 20, 2001. She practiced small animal medicine at Walker Animal Hospital. Dr. Victor was a member of the Minnesota VMA.

Dr. Wassermann (WSU '71), 56, Everett, Wash., died Oct. 21, 2001. From 1986–2000 Dr. Wassermann owned Evergreen Way Veterinary Hospital in Everett. Following graduation he had practiced small animal medicine at Diamond Veterinary Hospital in Everett for 17 years. At the time of his death, Dr. Wassermann was again practicing at Diamond, and also worked as a relief veterinarian.
