The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America announced that the Academy of Veterinary Zoological Medicine Technicians received full recognition in May.

The academy, created specifically for veterinary technicians working in zoological medicine, was first recognized in 2009 when it received provisional approval from NAVTA as a veterinary technician specialty.

“The Academy of Veterinary Zoological Medicine Technicians worked diligently to meet the Committee on Veterinary Technician Specialties standards required for NAVTA specialty recognition,” said Stephen Cital, registered veterinary technician and chair of the committee, in a press release. “NAVTA is thrilled that veterinary technicians with a strong passion for zoological medicine now have an even more solidified veterinary technician specialty to pursue.”

Veterinary technicians who successfully meet the academy’s requirements and pass the examination are designated as veterinary technician specialists in zoological medicine.

The AVZMT joins more than 20 NAVTA-recognized specialties such as dentistry, anesthesia, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care, equine nursing, surgery, and clinical practice, among others.

The Committee on Veterinary Technician Specialties was formed in 1994 and is recognized by the AVMA. The committee provides guidelines for veterinary technician organizations to facilitate the formation of specialties and assists the existing academies and societies. Academies develop pathways and advanced standards that candidates must complete and maintain to be awarded the designation of veterinary technician specialist in their specific discipline.
