John L. Azlin

Dr. Azlin (OKL ’55), 77, Oklahoma City, died May 25, 2008. He was the founder of Azlin Veterinary Clinic in Midwest City, Okla. Earlier in his 52-year career, Dr. Azlin practiced at Midwest Veterinary Hospital. He was a member of the Oklahoma VMA. Dr. Azlin is survived by a son and two daughters.

Alan H. Belcher

Dr. Belcher (AUB ’75), 60, Brent, Ala., died July 28, 2008. He practiced in Brent. Dr. Belcher was a member of the Alabama VMA. His wife, Linda; a son; a daughter; and a stepdaughter survive him. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 444, Mount Morris, IL 61054.

Jean M. Buist

Dr. Buist (COR ’42), 88, Basking Ridge, N.J., died Nov. 12, 2008. She owned a small animal practice in Sparta, N.J., prior to retirement in 2000. Earlier, Dr. Buist practiced at the Summit Dog and Cat Hospital in Summit, N.J. During her career, she also volunteered her services at the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race for several years.

Dr. Buist was a past president of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards and New Jersey Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and was past treasurer of the New Jersey VMA. She was also a past president of the Sussex County Horse Show Association, Sussex County Farm and Horse Show, and Newton Kennel Club. Dr. Buist served on the National Board Examination Committee from 1987-1992. In 1989, she was the recipient of the Association for Women Veterinarians Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award.

Active in civic life, Dr. Buist served on the Sparta Township Board of Health from 1962-1982 and was involved with the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the USA, and the 4-H Club. She is survived by her husband, Richardson; two daughters; and a son. Memorials may be made to the New Jersey Veterinary Foundation, 203 Towne Center Drive, Hillsborough, NJ 08844.

Hubert E. Carver

Dr. Carver (TEX ’41), 92, Rogers, Ark., died Oct. 20, 2008. He worked 27 years with the State Department, helping to develop veterinary services in the Americas, Asia, Middle East, and Africa. Charles J. Gurneau

Dr. Gurneau (MSU ’50), 87, Glendale, Wis., died May 25, 2008. He owned a practice in Milwaukee. In 2001, Dr. Gurneau received a 50-year award from the Wisconsin VMA. His wife, Virginia; four sons; and two daughters survive him. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.

Joseph M. Haines

Dr. Haines (CAL ’72), 69, Elkton, Md., died Sept. 19, 2008. He owned Fairhill Equine Veterinary Clinic in Fairhill, Md., since 1976. Earlier, Dr. Haines practiced equine medicine at Delaware Equine Center in Cochranville, Pa. During his career, he also taught equine medicine and management at the University of Delaware and Cecil Community College.

Dr. Haines was a member of the Maryland State Animal Response Team since 2005. He was also a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the Maryland and Pennsylvania VMAs. Dr. Haines’ wife, Rosalie, survives him. Memorials toward the Dr. Joseph M. Millard W. Ickes

Dr. Ickes (COL ’50), 88, Caldwell, Idaho, died Sept. 10, 2008. Retired since 1981, he was the founder of MWI Veterinary Supply and cofounder with his brother, Dr. Lionel C. Ickes (COL ’60), of Idaho Veterinary Hospital in Nampa, Idaho. Dr. Ickes also served as an affiliate faculty member at the University of Idaho, bred Quarter Horses, and was a judge for the American Quarter Horse Association. During retirement, he worked 12 years as a veterinary consultant for Agri-Beef, the company to which he sold MWI Veterinary Supply.

Dr. Ickes was a past president of the Idaho and Southwestern VMAs, Lower Snake River Valley Quarter Horse Association, and Western Riding Clubs Association. He was also past director of the AQHA and a member of the Idaho Cattle Feeders Association, American Association of Bovine Practitioners, and American Association of Equine Practitioners. In 2006, Dr. Ickes was inducted into the Idaho Racing Quarter Horse Hall of Fame. He was a co-recipient of the Idaho Horse Park Horseman of the Year Award in 2007.

A veteran of World War II, Dr. Ickes served in the Air Force, attaining the rank of captain. His wife, Shirley; four daughters; and ten stepchildren survive him. Howard L. Johns

Dr. Johns (AUB ’49), 87, Huntingdon, Tenn., died Sept. 12, 2008. He owned a practice in Huntingdon until 1986. A member of the Tennessee VMA, Dr. Johns received a Distinguished Service Award in 1985. Active in civic life, he was a member of the board of directors of the Carroll County electrical department, farmers cooperative, and chamber of commerce. 1980, Dr. Johns received the Carroll County Silver Medallion Award. He was the recipient of the Carroll Countian of the Year Award in 1992 and the Town of Huntingdon Outstanding Citizen Award in 1998.

Dr. Johns was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He is survived by three daughters.

Robert J. Legler

Dr. Legler (COR ’65), 71, Vernon, N.Y., died Oct. 5, 2008. Prior to retirement in 2002, he practiced equine medicine in the Vernon and Verona areas of New York. During his career, Dr. Legler also served as the veterinarian for the Vernon Downs racetrack. He was a veteran of the Navy. Dr. Legler is survived by his wife, Barbara; three sons; and four daughters. Memorials may be made to the Volunteer Fire Department of Vernon, P.O. Box 773, Vernon, NY 13476.

James E. Lovell

Dr. Lovell (ISU ’46), 84, Omaha, Ark., died July 4, 2008. Prior to retirement in 1975, he was a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Earlier in his career, Dr. Lovell practiced in Monroe, Wis., and Aurora, Ill., and served as a professor at Iowa State University. During retirement, he owned a cattle farm in Omaha.

A veteran of the Korean War, Dr. Lovell was a captain in the Air Force. His wife, Francine; a son; a daughter; and two stepdaughters survive him.

Barbara J. Pierozak

Dr. Pierozak (UP ’81), 55, Linden, N.J., died Nov 1, 2008. Prior to retirement in 2007, she was a small animal relief veterinarian in Linden for more than 25 years. Dr. Pierozak also worked part time for The Seeing Eye, a dog guide school in Morristown, N.J., for the past four years. She was a member of the New Jersey VMA, American Animal Hospital Association, and New Jersey Society of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery. Douglas P. Schank

Dr. Schank (MSU ’69), 61, Rochester, Mich., died July 26, 2008. During his career, he owned a small and exotic animal practice in Sterling Heights, Mich., and served as director of the veterinary department of the Macomb County Humane Society. Dr. Schank is survived by his wife, Donna, and a daughter. Memorials may be made to the Michigan Humane Society, 30300 Telegraph Road, Suite 220, Bingham Farms, MI 48025.

Bruce Schmucker

Dr. Schmucker (UP ’59), 74, Berwyn, Pa., died May 31, 2008. Prior to retirement, he served as chief of the regulations and compliance division of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Animal Health and Diagnostic Services. Following graduation, Dr. Schmucker served as a captain in the Air Force. In 1962, he established Great Valley Veterinary Hospital, a mixed animal practice in Frazer, Pa.

Paul E. Zollman

Dr. Zollman (MO ’50), 86, Rochester, Minn., died Oct. 29, 2008. A diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, he was a veterinarian at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester for 41 years. Dr. Zollman helped develop Oxbow Park & Zollman Zoo in Byron, Minn.

A member of the Minnesota VMA, he was Veterinarian of the Year in 1990. Dr. Zollman served on the Minnesota Zoo and Oxbow Park board of directors. He was also a member of the Rochester Planning and Zoning Commission, Olmsted County Fair Board, and Olmstead County Park and Recreation Committee. Dr. Zollman is survived by his wife, Dawn, and five daughters. Memorials may be made to Friends of Oxbow, 5731 County Road, 105 N.W., Byron, MN 55920.
