Call for comments opens: Veterinary technician educational standards
The AVMA Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities® (AVMA CVTEA®) is accepting comments on some of its educational standards for accredited veterinary technology education programs.
Anyone interested in educational standards for veterinary technicians is invited to submit comments through a public survey until April 15, 2024. The CVTEA is soliciting comments on several standards that are undergoing regular cyclical review, as well as specific matters in some other standards.
These sections are undergoing cyclical review:
- Standard 9—Faculty and staff
- Standard 10—Curriculum
- Appendix F—Species (companion, food and fiber, laboratory and exotic)
- Appendix G—Section 1 (Office and hospital procedures, client relations, and communication)
- Appendix G—Section 4 (Anesthesia)
- Appendix G—Section 7 (Imaging)
Portions of the following sections also are included in the call for feedback. In these sections, only a specific change is being presented for comment, not the entire section. Details are included in the commenting survey.
- Standard Section 4c—Facilities
- Appendix F—Clinical equipment
- Appendix G—Section 3 (Nursing: Therapeutics subsection)
The survey should take about 30-40 minutes to complete.

Staff/Tech’s
I believe education is important in veterinary medicine and we should be held to a high standard. In order to see change in the field this needs to be a requirement across the board. That being said, I think we should let nurses who have not gone through a school but who have worked in the veterinary field for at least two years, signed off by a veterinarian, sit for the VTNE and be able to become licensed, regardless of state. After that, require new nurses coming into the field to go to school or make schooling more accessible. Continuing education is already a requirement but a suggestion would be to require more, or specific, CE for nurses who did not complete school.
